Hi, Alan I see that the info I pasted has an error, make the '85 an I5.
And actually the OM603 I6 displacement is something like 2.996 L not 3.0 Liters. whats a few centiliters between friends anyway? Anyway the turbo model numbers are hard to find on the turbos themselves I don't see much in the way of ID.

(bump) Does anyone know what model this turbo was intended for? would it work as a 617 turbo?

i never knew that the turbo brand affected performance, but i have observed that of the six or seven 300 turbos some did seem to be more noticably coming on the boost and some werer more of a flat torque curve. now i know why.
as far as how it happens that some have one and some the other i have never seen a reason and would assume it was availabliliy at the tme of mfgr.
