After searching I did a test on my Turbo and found
that it is only producing a steady 5psi. At shifts it will sometimes spike 6psi but for the most part only 5. I used a pressure gauge t'd into the line. I tried it with and without the overboost protection relay. Same results.
I have looked at the archives and tried to find a decent picture of the wastegate but to no avail. I don't know what kind of turbo I have. I have read alot of words on how to determine the type of turbo I have but I ain't too bright (I rode the short buses in school). I will post a pic of my turbo the best I can and you guys tell me what kind of turbo I have. Okay? Kevin |

How do i adjust this baby?
I feel that the spring is weak in the wastegate. I would like to get another 2 or 3 psi out of the turbo. Is the can looking thing the wastegate housing? I understand the procedure, it seems pretty straightforward, but I don't want to tear into the wrong thing.
In case some of you are thinking that I don't need to mess with it since I have such questions please be aware that I have a completely rebuilt turbo in the shed just waiting to be installed. I don't want to use it unless I have to. Kevin |

you take the plate off the end , on the left side of picture #2.......there is a FAQ posted on how and what you do.
I will do it that way when weather get warmer. I have a boost controller on it now ....but it leaks oil that gets drawn into the turbo from the crancase ventilation............a drop hear and a drop their with the turbulant air in the bay and you have a genuine mess on your hand.

Yes thats the one as I understand it. Keep in mind I have not actually done this adjustment yet however. I only read the FAQ. As I have done a workaround, in warmer weather I shall asdjust the wastegate properly. Its just too damn cold out here now.

I must correct myself!
This is what I need to remove. This is the cover held on by the spring clip. I think i have got it. i think
I finally was able to make sense of the ALLDATADIY jet black picture I also dug out my rebuilt spare turbo and saw the spring clip that has to be removed. This ought to be interesting I've never had trouble tearing things apart. It has always been the puting things back together that I have trouble with and I'll bet that's a royal pain Kevin Last edited by oilslick; 02-18-2005 at 10:41 PM. |

It didn't seem all that easy from the FAQ...........but I will find out for myself in a month or so when warmer weather is here to stay for a while.

I plan on doing the same... attempted it last weekend but couldn't get the rusted nuts off. too damn cold out. my head gasket is seeping oil at the rear of the head (use a mirror to see) so I'm going to hold off till after I put a new head gasket on before adjusting the boost pressure. I have a T3 as well and it ain't easy to get at.

Forget taking the wastegate apart at all. Just install a needle valve in the vac line to the wastegate (the hose coming from the compressor to the gate valve) and adjust it till the boost pressure is 10-12psi, then lock it (you'll need to have a vac gauge somewhere coming off the manifold WHILE DRIVING to check it.)
No taking turbo off, no playing with rusted parts, easy to adjust the exact boost you want. HIGHLY recommend installing a boost gauge to minitor it, but if you set it up UNDER POWER and lock the valve, it should stay at the set boost. PS. If you blow your motor to bits doing this without monitoring your boost, don't blame me.

there are several discussions on the subject of using a pressure regulator to increase boost. Basically it tricks the wastegate actuator by lowering the pressure to it, therefore the actual pressure at the manifold is higher by a differential, adjustable externally. see: Boost controller.....
If your wastegate isn't closing properly this won't help it to spool up like it should.
