If you don't mind the speedo inaccuracy, you could get different sized wheels to change the mileage read and speed up the goal. You'd be cheating but only you, me and this boad will know. In fact, by the time you report it, I'll bet this post will have long gone and no one will know.

Or I could just pull the guages out and put the odo on any number I want! In 10 minutes I could have an 80k mile SDL and off to ebay it goes. It is really scary how simple it is to change the odo's on these cars.

No I can take the pic at 120 myself, I will just put the cell in my other hand!

Gassers do miles too!

I have a 1988 300E with 470,000km (290,000mi approx) on the clock. Original engine, rebuilt trans once and the normal maintenance things.

That's pretty impressive, AF300E. Although not that surprising from an MB, even a gasser.

That is prettymuch idle and the manual only says you need .5 at idle... What does your cars run?

That is getting up there for a gasser

How much oil does your 300e use between oil changes?

OK, I am an outsider and mine has 300K, with original engine, original trans and original engine mount. And it is a gas engine -- '87 300E

elau how much oil does your beast use?

I have an 83 300sd with over 300k that uses less than a quart every 3k but i dont imagine a gasser could do that or could it?

Well, my gaser has a leak on the timing chain gasket that I have not fixed so it takes a quart every 200 miles. The leak started a year and a half ago at about 280K, but before that I have not noticed any oil consumption. The car does not smoke at start up or while running.

Warmup

How do you usualy warm up this motor? I know startup usualy tends to be the killer on motors. Do you do a lot of long trips?

The low oil pressure is due to the circumstance. At the point the picture was taken I had been driving on the highway for about two hours so the engine was as hot as it gets, and I had just let off the pedal and was basically engine braking, so the RPMs were only about 700, and my car, at idle and at full temperature, shows a hair under 2 bars of oil pressure, but as soon as the RPMs hit 1000 it pegs the oil pressure meter. So don't worry, its never actually driving around at that low of an oil pressure.

I usually let the car warm up for about a minute, longer if its still running rough (though a minute usually gets it in all weather conditions), and then drive slowly till I get over 40C (keep RPMs under 2000). I'm using Mobil 1 Delvac 5w40 to help with cold starts and keep the engine lubricated for startup. Unfortunately I only live about 4 miles from work (well, its fortunate, but not for the car ). I share commuting duty between the car in bad weather and my scooter in nice weather. However, I do take regular highway trips to see friends, pick up parts, go to conferences, etc. Probably one out of every 5 trips is a good long highway trip. For example, despite being only 4 miles from work, since I've bought the car I've put an average of 64 miles per day on it.

The previous owner had a 100 mile commute, so before me it was getting primarily long highway trips.

I know that the short trips are considered 'severe duty' and I'm taking that into account when I plan my oil changes and oil choices and whatnot. Hopefully with care I can prevent that from being a real problem for the engine.

peace,
sam

phidauex -- that's awesome! Glad you and the TD made it to my place for the hatch & glass, and I'm honored to have been the destination on your official 250K voyage!

Oil Consumption

The 300e probably uses a quart every 2000mi. It doesn't foul plugs at all so I suspect the stem seals and guides are probably ok. What it does need however is a new air flow potentiometer and a couple of lifters. Hmm.....
