617 '05' Camshaft Specifications:

According to the MBZ Reference Guide, this (05) camshaft should be installed to the following specifications @ 2mm valve lift:

Intake Opens 9° ATDC

Intake Closes 15° ABDC

Exhaust Opens 27° BBDC

Exhaust Closes 18° BTDC

Since I plot the valve events of every lobe before installation, I felt oblidged to provide you with the following information. All values are with camshaft installed at a theoretic 'zero' position on the stock timing marks:

Valve Overalp -27.0°

Intake Duration 186°

Exhaust Duration 189°

Intake Centerline 102°

Exhaust Centerline 112.5°

I did not record the lift figures, although each lobe was checked to ensure similar profiles.

Of interesting not, an increase of roughly .001" valve lash will retard the camshaft opening figure by approximately 2° overall.

I hope this information is helpful...Bert

I think the '05' Camshafts were a 1980-up article...Bert

I was doing a search to find the camshaft timing for my 617 when I encountered this very useful thread. I have only two small clarifications to add to the provided specs:

Intake centerline is 102° ATDC
Exhaust centerline is 112.5° BTDC

All that is very interesting, but camshaft timing has very little effect on much of anything in a diesel. In a gas engine, just a few degrees can cause drastic differences in engine behavior, but in a diesel the performance characteristics are determined by fuel delivery not camshaft timing.

Have a great day,

I don't know about that. I put in a 4deg woodruff key and my performance and mileage increased. I can feel how much better it runs.

That's because of it's effect on IP timing.

Good luck,

Camshaft timing will always have an effect on engine performance, it just isn't as drastic on a Diesel engine. I have watched the changes on a chassis Dynometer with the delivery set at 24° BTDC. A mere 4° of advance is worth around 4-6 lbs/ft of Torque on a good running engine.

Setting the '05' cam at 'zero index,' advancing the pump timing to about 28° BTDC and increasing boost pressure to 1.0 BAR makes for a very nice running engine...Bert

Danny, I think Larry was just feeling contraian when he posted that answer to you... when the cam position is changed with something like an offset key then the IP would be set after that... thus the increase in mileage figures you got would most likely be due to exactly what you thought they were... getting the engine back as close to original specs as possible...

Yeah, that Larry guy....sheesh....

Actually I forgot about the IP timing being brought back to spec. That was a good point.
