I think most people just don't know that the location field is there...

In case you don't know:

1. Make sure you are logged into the forum.
2. Click on the 'User CP' link in the blue bar above the thread you are reading.
3. In the bar of links on the left, click "Edit Profile".
4. Scroll down to the input box near the bottom of the page that is labeled "Location"
5. Fill in your location in the form, "City, State/Country" or "State/Country" or "Region of State/Country".
6. Click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the form. You're done!

Why fill in the location field?

Problems with your vehicle may be tied to location. Different fuel availability, vehicle type availability, weather conditions, road salting habits and mechanic choices might affect the answer to your questions. People who live near you can offer personalized advice (such as mechanic recommendations, fueling station recommendations, etc).

Also, many forum members have extra parts they would not mind selling (or giving) to you if you are close enough to pick it up (mailing a 300TD hatch by UPS is a huge pain in the butt). Posting your location lets people offer to help in ways other than just online.

Its still safe. If you list your City, or even just your State, it is still nearly impossible to locate you. If you don't believe me, I live in St. Louis, MO, try and find me! You won't be able to, trust me. That is, unless I've done business with you in some other way, in which case you already have what you need to know.

Peace,
Sam

thanks for the tip. I didn't see that field. BTW, I went to high school in Hamden, not too far from Milford.

Well, at least you still have your legs.
