No locations in profiles...

Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of folks are no longer listing where they are from. That's oane of the first things I always look for because it can help in diagnosing problems...
Ok, so Central Oregon is pretty broad but if you're from around here you know where I live...;) right Ross?

boneheaddoctor 02-22-2005 10:38 PM

People should at least say what part of what state they are from at the very least.

whunter 02-22-2005 10:43 PM

Well.

I am happy if they have State listed.

Johnhef 02-22-2005 11:50 PM

ditto.

And, it would be additionally beneficial if folks would put their vehicle in their signature (year and model). Many members refer to their 123 or their 300D, but, without a year listed, the answers can be radically different. Simply putting it in your profile is almost certain to create confusion.

Both Roy and myself recently made this error regarding glow plugs (series type) for an older 300D. The poster did list the year of the vehicle in the body of the message, but, it likely would not have been missed if it was in the signature.

I concur.

I always assume that if a person does not list at least their STATE... that they have exwives or THE LAW looking for them.....

How is "the law" going to find out the identity of "Leathermang" as an example?

Do they check a special Mercedes-Shop data base, that is secret even to Bill Wood, and cross check to find out who "Leathermang" is?

Paranoia paranoia, everybody's coming to get me... http://forums.offtopic.com/images/smilies/ugh.gif

Spo123 02-23-2005 06:37 PM

Milford, Ct.

Hatterasguy,
It sounds to me like you reside in the Woodmont section................perhaps even near the old E.M. Lowes estate......(now somewhat cut up into seperate lots......at least 30 years ago......................)
Best wishes always,
Spo out

whunter 02-23-2005 08:48 PM

We want the wheel center caps, hood and trunk star off your 1987 300SDL. :ROTFL: :D

barry123400 02-24-2005 12:01 AM

Will list my location on profile to help kill the paranoia I guess and also hope to meet someone close to me on site. Not likely though as live in northern nova scotia. That of course has it's upside as all the parts cars are mine. You know the drill. If you do not sell those parts to me for virtually nothing it will just get pressed. Works everytime. Lots of good mechanical parts up here but the sheetmetal is bad. Low ultra violet radiation and heat so a lot of interior parts are really good though. Quite a few 123s showing up in this area. Were only 1-2 a couple of years ago but expect to top thirty or more this year. Made it to 14-16 last summer. Suspect majority are from american ebay transactions. Live in an area of thirty thousand people and that consists of town and surrounding local areas. :)

I think most people just don't know that the location field is there...

In case you don't know:

1. Make sure you are logged into the forum.
2. Click on the 'User CP' link in the blue bar above the thread you are reading.
3. In the bar of links on the left, click "Edit Profile".
4. Scroll down to the input box near the bottom of the page that is labeled "Location"
5. Fill in your location in the form, "City, State/Country" or "State/Country" or "Region of State/Country".
6. Click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the form. You're done!

Why fill in the location field?

Problems with your vehicle may be tied to location. Different fuel availability, vehicle type availability, weather conditions, road salting habits and mechanic choices might affect the answer to your questions. People who live near you can offer personalized advice (such as mechanic recommendations, fueling station recommendations, etc).

Also, many forum members have extra parts they would not mind selling (or giving) to you if you are close enough to pick it up (mailing a 300TD hatch by UPS is a huge pain in the butt). Posting your location lets people offer to help in ways other than just online.

Its still safe. If you list your City, or even just your State, it is still nearly impossible to locate you. If you don't believe me, I live in St. Louis, MO, try and find me! You won't be able to, trust me. That is, unless I've done business with you in some other way, in which case you already have what you need to know.

Peace,
Sam

deeph8 02-24-2005 09:47 AM

thanks for the tip. I didn't see that field. BTW, I went to high school in Hamden, not too far from Milford.
