U-tube intake rubber selaing ring problems
 

A few weeks ago, I started to hear whistling from the engine compartment whenever I accelerated. I quickly realized it was the turbo. So, I took a look under the hood, and saw that the U-tube was loose where it connects to the air filter. I tightened up the metal expanding clip, but that didn't work. I realized it was a problem with the rubber sealing ring in the tube. So, I got a new one, and installed it. My problem was fixed, until the rubber ring going around the turbo inlet was bad as well. I replaced that, and put everything back together. After that, the U-tube just fell off at the part that connects to the air filter. I looked at the rubber sealing ring, and every time I try to reconnect it, it will not seal around the air filter, but slip down the tube. Am I supposed to use some sort of adhesive to keep the ring from slipping or something?

The rubber ring is held in by the force it is under, nothing else is required. It is dit is very difficult to put these on properly, esp the end on the a/f housing. It is usually pressed on with the filter housing held by another person, or clamped in a vise. Then the whole a/f housing with U tube is put on over the turbo inlet.
You could probably use some help in putting on a new ring.
I ordered new rings (gaskets technically) but wish I had used the old ones, because there is a ring on the metal snout of the housing that leaves an indentation in the gasket after some time, and it is easier to use an old gasket then a new one because of the groove that ring leaves in the gasket.

I think you confused me a little bit. :dead: I tried this method here with no results... I put the gasket on the air filter housing first, and then attempted to slide the tube over it, that didn't work. If I put the gasket in the tube, then attach the tube, the gaskets slips down into the tube. I'm guessing that some oil has something to do with the slipping.

Just an idea (I've had almost the exact same problem, except I managed to get mine on)..

I think I cleaned (degreased) the side on the flat rubber ring that fits into the U. (My thought was this might keep it from sliding) I did lube the inside of the flat rubber ring as well as the fitting on the turbo.

The only other thing that I can suggest right now, is to take a hairdryer to it, and get it soft/pliable ...maybe it will cooperate with you better.

It's already pretty pliable. It's a new gasket, and I managed to get it in trouble free. It only started sliding when I took it off t put a new gasket on the turbo part, I guess it didn't slide at fist cause it was brand new, and dry on the flat side. I'll try your method of degreasing it to stop the sliding.
