Tranmission noise

I need some help. My new to me 1985 300TD wagon has developed a noise. It is a metallic grinding noise that sounds like it is at the tranmission. It is constant and annoying. I do need a half shaft in the rear I know. Would this transmit a grinding noise to the transmission? What about the carrier bearing or flex disc would these do it. I was told the trans was new when I purchased it. Also I have noticed on hard acceleration that the shift lever seems to whine while it is shifting. I adjusted the vacuum modulator and that helped in the shifting...... what could it be. It seemed to get worse when I had to brake hard for a light last night.

Sounds like a bad engine mount allowing the engine or tranmission to contact the car's chassis...it might be a center support bearing but they usually whirr or go wup, wup, wup, wup under acceleration.

Silly boy, that's the sound we all love — Mr. D's machine!

Seriously, you may have something bad going on in that tranny but, before throwing the towel in, get under there and look for a loose exhaust mount or something like that...the increased noise after hard braking makes me think it is something simple.

Could it be shifter bushings? I know when they get worn they sound as if a tin can is being dragged behind the car sometimes!!

It might be the U joints. I just am stumped really. I have an extra 85 trans just in case I believe the 85 was different then all other years. I hope it is not that.

Well I guess the trans is dead. I was driving it and when I went to pull away from a stop the thing would not shift out of 1st...... Thank God I have a extra transmission. My 80 sd has almost 300,000 miles on the original and this one was rebuilt not very long ago in the wagon. They must have done something wrong. Do the 85 transmissions have a weak point?

I figure the noise I was hearing was the bands getting chewed up.... I also remember some talk about what is known as the B2 piston. I don't think this could be the problem. Also I have Two new half shafts on the way from autozone. Cheaper than I expected at 99 dollars each. Good deal I thought.

Thanks,
Dieselman
