Do the mid 80's diesels need valve adjustments?

There is a guy I work with that has a 1985 300SD. He has a little over 200K on the odometer. I was talking with him about maintenance on it and asked him if he gets the valves adjusted every 15,000 miles. I was told that this should be done on older W123 and W126 diesels. He told me that he has never had them adjusted because his independent mechanic told him that it was not needed after 150,000 miles. He cited that there is no longer any play in the valves and adjusting them wouldnt have any effect.

Comments?

A bunch of malarky.

Tell him you'll adjust the valves for him, and he can watch, as you open them up to their proper clearance.
