newbie question- valve cover hole
hey guys,
I'm new to the board but find this forum invaluable since aquiring an '86 190D 2.5 in September. I've been able to find most answers through searches but this one is odd. I was changing the oil the other day and wiped down the valve cover to find a 1/8" hole drilled in the left side close to the top corner about 2" back from the fill cap. I never noticed it before now, and it makes no sense why it would be there. The PO did numerous things to "better" the car and chasing all the loose ends has been fun. He's a Rolls Royce enthusiast go figure. Is this supposed to be on a 602? Thanks guys for any answers. |

Have the save hole..
Have the same hole in my '86 valve cover, and seem to be constantly wiping the little bit of oil that escapes from it. Have wondered what it is all about, but have not had the need to take the valve cover off yet. I am going to seal it in some form or fashion when I take it off and see what is going on in there.
Bill

Sounds like you will be the first one here to find out why MB put a small vent hole there! |

Thanks for the reply...I just wanted to know if Mercedes put it there or not because if not I was going to fill it with weld. Now I'll just leave it alone and scratch my head when I see it. Inside the valve cover the hole goes behind the baffle attached to the inside top of the valve cover. Hard to say what it is for as there is plenty of crankcase ventilation with the big hole in the top.
Thanks again! |

holes
although the reason for the hole is not apparent, i guarantee there is a reason or it would not be there.
