Maybe I missed it but does anyone know the exact ratios for the 5 speed transmission? Is 5th merely an overdrive with 1-4 being the same or all the gears spaced differently than the 4 speeds?

The gearing on 1-> 4 is the same as a 4-speed and fifth is an approximately 20% OD.

true, unless the fiver comes from a 16v which has five close ratios and no od.

The only fivers that easily fit 616 and 617 diesels (the Getrag w/OD tailpiece and the MBZ iron 4-speed w/OD tailpiece) are geared as I stated above. The gearbox out of a 16V may fit the 603 (starter wart issue).

So it's roughly a 0.80 to 1 ratio?

Is the 4th gear on the 240's close to 1:1 or is it slightly under? The reason I ask is that I love my W115 240d but I wish it had more power since I nearly get run over every day driving it and it just doesn't have the power to overtake another car. Since I have my W115 300D which runs great it would be an excellent engine and driveline, and rear diff donor. A 5 speed would make it even sweeter but would 80hp be enough to use the overdrive on the freeway?

Now the question is will it make any difference and will it justify the cost even sticking with the 4 speed....other than the fact that I can't find anyone who would do the conversion to begin with.

Don't know this for sure, just guessing. I've never had the 5-speed out of my 240 and the car hasn't been run in over a year. You should ping forum member Palangi on this. Paul has a running Euro w/5-speed and also has a lot of MBZ knowledge between his ears. He may be able to offer something.

It is 1:1. I've checked it.

Sure it's enough.. If you're in a hilly area. you may have to downshift occasionally or, run in fourth a lot but, hey, that's what you're doing now!

Probably not.
