I still don't get that SRCC website. I don't see where they are selling oil. What's going on? Why was that link posted? I don't get the joke.

I love my 98 E300. Its a great car with just shy of 152K miles on it. Its getting ready to head into the stealership for a tranny fluid change, and a head R&R later when it gets warmer...$^@*($& glowplugs.

I used to love cars, now I just tolerate them. But I am kind of fond of the 210. My 97 E300 (110k miles) is becoming more dependable ( never had any major surprises or breakdowns except for a dead battery - my fault) I,like others on the board here, put a lot of PM money and personal labor into their cars (like an airplane) to keep it so, and as a result I enjoy the ride during my long trips. If it was'nt for the cheap plastic parts and electronics, it would be a dream.

I have noticed that since most of the 210 problems mentioned on this board have been addressed on my car, I have had no issue crop up in the last 10 k miles!

Maybe I am in the free ride zone! I seems to me that all my originally owned cars (ie proper PM and not inheriting someone else's lack of PM) have had a free ride zone at some point. Anybody else experience that? Maybe its just luck. I don't have any wear items to replace (like brakes, tires) for the next 20k miles so I think 2005 will be a good year. But then again I have to look forward to the next cycle of MB parts failing after the next 75-90k miles.

It still rides like new.

My wife recently upgraded to a 98 E300D - I've only driven it a couple of thousand miles. It's fast and refined gets 32-34MPG has more room and better HVAC systems but I can't help thinking I prefer the chassis dynamics of my 91 W124 2.5 turbo.

The rack and pinion steering on my W210 just does not seem to have the same road feel or straight line stability as my earlier W124 car. I find myself making twice as many steering corrections per mile than I do in the 2.5 turbo. My wife upgraded from a 93 400E and though I have not asked her, I suspect she would take the 400E back in a second.

Maybe my W210 needs ball joints or some other front end work but I'm not 100% sold on the newer E-class at this point.

Sounds like that front end needs some work. The steering is very smooth yet solid.

Mine is. Maybe he needs to have it on a rack and checked?

I have had my share of small and bigger problems, and recently had the front left wheel bearing just abruptly fail. Did the brakes and then the balljoints at the same time. I found by changing the wheels and tires to an 18 inch wheel and the appropriate tire (I am in Colorado now and cannot recall the exact size of the tire) the steering became miuch more responsive.

I have grown to suspect my car of wanting to stop being a car based on its array of failures. I witnessed a W210 lose the front left spring when the perch failed while on a business trip in Germany about a year ago. I wonder about that now too.

But if I ignore the scary stuff, it seems the car is really a lot of fun to drive and returns unequalled mileage for the size and luxury features. I am going to keep it a long time and will be familiar with all its weaknesses in the next decade. Jim

Jim, what symptoms did you have for your wheel bearing failing? Recently I have developed a slight groan noise fron the right front, as if I'm running an all-terrain tire. The noise is most noticeable between 20-40mph and at highway speeds you can't really notice it...

210 tidbits

repost...
while the top spring mounts on 210's have come apart in the past, it is a rarity, keep an eye on them, if the welds come apart, it will occur over time, and not just all of a sudden one day.

for more on the suspension, ball joints are a common wear out fast item, but the all time winner of the quickest wear out item is the control arm bushings, a week doesn't go by without me replacing a set.

I had a 95 E300 I did some work on today, non turbo and all I can say is that I hope you guys have the turbo models! That thing was slow, it was like, accel off the line was good but once it shifts, man where did all the power go???

and finally, for those of you looking for a dash, I have one I was about to get rid of. just make an offer! I'm going to try and find the pictures of it.

well unless the file size allowances get bigger I cant post any pictures. I tried twice to install my photo program on this new computer and it has turned the computer off twice now and wont let me turn it back on untill i shut off the powerstrip.

If anyone wants to see the dash pics, just PM or email me.

Geeze it's not that slow. If you're in a hurry buy a turbo. Sitting in DC beltway traffic I'd be going the same speed in a 500E....

The 95 E300D isn't a speed demon, but gets 35mpg and 650+ miles per tank of fuel...all in the W124 chassis. At highway speeds there is plenty of power to cruise at 75-80 all day long.

Better be careful Chuck - If his 87 300D is in good running condition you will be looking for a new car.....
