This is why I will always love Mercedes Benz (pre 1998).Look at the last picture and paragraph.50+ miles an hour on the same side, driver not hurt.Just like mine did (RIP Oct,27,2004-will have update later),did her job and very very well.Just like the Mastercard commercial-being able to walk away from a hit like this to see family and friends-PRICELESS

Bad BIDDERS screw eBay sellers!

That is one example of what eBay is BAD about!!!
Allowing stupid bidders to screw up a sale, there are bad people on eBay and that seller was so unlucky as to have one mess up his day. He paid for an auction, based on the selling prioce I guess it was $50, plus the cost to list the item in time and eBay advance fees, then a goof ball came along
Sad deal!
BTW heres the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4521067015

Not bad for a 20 year old car that was actually engineered 30 years ago!

I think its bad because the guy who won has severely negative feedback, and a cancelled account.

Hence, the guy will have to re-list the car, at his own expense. Since listing fees are based on your starting bid, his high starting bid means high listing fees, wasted by a bad ebay buyer.

peace,
sam

It's not possible to stop all "nuisance bidders", but eBay does have some (limited) tools available to keep away a few of them. Sellers would be well advised to use those tools for what they're worth.

One can, for example, automatically:

1) block bidders with "net negative feedback"

2) block bidders who have received two or more "unpaid item strikes" within the past 30 days

(I use both of these.)

One can also automatically:

3) block bidders registered in countries to which one does not ship.

4) block bidders who don't have PayPal accounts

(I don't use these.)

If one has a "Buy it Now" option, then one can specify that immediate payment is required in order to exercise the BIN option. Until it's paid, the auction stays up, so the auction can't be killed by a "BIN bandit".

(I don't use this, either.)

The listing fees work like that for general items, but eBay Motors is a different deal - see the eBay Motors fee schedule. Fixed $40 listing fee, fixed $40 "Transaction Services Fee" if it sells, but that's it. Compared to regular eBay sales, this is a good deal if one is selling a car for a lot of money, and not such a good deal if one is selling a car for very little money. In particular, it's pricey (compared to regular eBay auctions) to keep something visible for a significant period of time while waiting for the "right buyer" to happen to find it.

Still a bum deal for the seller, of course. If the buyer is NARU (No longer A Registered User), then perhaps the seller could get eBay to refund the "Transaction Services Fee". I don't know how they handle it in eBay Motors. In regular eBay auctions, it's straightforward to get the "Final Value Fee" refunded in regular auctions if the winning bidder doesn't pay.

The deadbeat bidder did not mess up that sale, as there were no other bidders. The starting price of $999.00 messed up the sale.

It's simply a tough gig all the way around.

A fairly limited number of buyers would be really interested in the item, and the cost/hassle of collecting it increases with distance. If the car were local to me, I'd be trying to make a deal (and trying to figure out the least offensive place to park it at my house).

The other killer for this one is how much it costs in eBay motors to keep a car "on display" until the buyer with the right combination of need, location, gumption, etc. happens along. OK for a $10k car, not so good for a $1k car.

I don't know if one could float this car as "parts only" at regular eBay auction listing rates (with a final value fee upon sale) instead of at vehicle rates. If so, then that might be the way to go.

Again, the only ones I routinely use are the ones that block based on feedback and on unpaid item strikes.

The block on bidders based on location is something that would be useful if you don't want to deal with an international transaction. I don't use it because, for many items, I'm willing to deal with the additional inconvenience and/or risk to make the sale. It hasn't burned me yet.

The requirement for a PayPal account, and the requirement of instant payment by PayPal for Buy It Now purchases, well, I just think they'd do me more harm than good. No need for me to scare off a prospective buyer just because he'd like to pay me a different way (especially a way where PayPal doesn't take a cut).

Red face

First off I must apologize for setting off a fire storm of controversy.Since I personally know first hand (mine only at 31 mph against an unlicensed 17 yo female with a 16 year old female in a 2005 Nissan Frontier-but she was insured-the judge as well as myself had a good laugh) how well they hold up in mid speed impacts,it is VERY VERY NICE TO KNOW you can survive an impact of 50 plus mph on your side (fuel tank did not leak or rupture) and be able to sell the remains of the car.

My mistake-it wasn't a car.It was a Mercedes Benz. And yes they were engineered like NO OTHER CAR IN THE WORLD!!!!
