Opacity

Thanks for posting that comment about your opacity test results. I bought one of Brian's EGR kits and then did not install it when I realized that it might impact the results of the test that I have to do on my 87 300D. I think that I agree with you about the ridiculous nature of that test since I have never come close to the limit-even before I had the factory crate engine installed in Nov 03. I am going to proceed with the installation of the kit.

Other than recent very high diesel fuel costs, why do you say Washington is a horrible place for a diesel?

California, which is easily the most antismog regulated state, doesn't even require a smog test for diesels (of course they don't sell them here either but there sure are lots of them running around). The only limit that I'm aware of is that the police can give you a ticket if they see your car (diesel or not) smoking for more than a few seconds other when accelerating or cold. I've never, ever heard of anyone actually getting a ticket and I've been living here and hanging around vintage car people for twenty years. That said I'm not sure I'd try to blow out the soot on a hill with a CHP cruiser right behind me.

Emissions in WA state

I just had my 85 300d tested. Opacity = 27! They handed me a booklet of diesel technicians who could make my car pass on the next try.

Instead, I went home and ran a can of Diesel Purge through. Went back for the re-test, opacity = 1.

I think that $7 can of Diesel Purge was money well spent. BTW the first re-test is free in WA.
