How do you replace the rubber strip on the bumper?
My search through the archives was fruitless...
How do you get that new one on? The old one was easy to peel out, but the new one just won't slide on....even with soapy water. Any tricks?

It will go on, it just takes some elbow grease. When I did the rear bumper strip on my wagon I first drilled two very small holes in the ends of the plastic attaching strips (or whatever Mercedes calls them) that the rubber bumper strip slides onto and wired them together. Obviously you do this at the center of the bumper where the ends are close together. You want to use thin wire that will be out of the way but will hold the strips together so they don't pop out of the bumper as you slide the rubber strip on. Next I removed one of the two rubber finishing pieces at the forward edge of the bumper so I could easily get at the end of the plastic attachment strip. Spray some WD40 on the inside of the rubber strip all along it's length. Starting at the exposed end of the attachment strip slide the rubber bumper all the way around into position. It will take a little working to get it to turn the corners but once you get by them you'll find the whole strip will slide into place. It isn't easy and is probably easier with a helper but I did it by myself (and worked up a reasonable sweat in the process). The key is to wire the attachment strips together so you don't get one or the other popping out as you push the strip around. Others here may have a better way to do it but this method worked for me. Be sure to have a cold beer ready for when you are done.

no no no, its much simpler than that. take your favorite lubricant, spray down the guide rails, position the rubber strip in the right spot and using a rubber mallet, just beat the strip on. 1 minute job.

I hate to do away with the opportunity to work out your frustrations, but there is a simpler way than that. You simply start at one end and "roll" it on. Fold the end over, push it in place and then just roll it on. It's a one minute job.
Good luck, |

I tried to "beat" my rubber bumper strip on but it wouldn't work. I think the the rubber had gotten too hard for that. Maybe I should have used a bigger hammer.

Absolute success!
Thank you all for your input! I took a 3 pound sledge to it, gently of course, it all snapped into place.

I used the wire trick because the plastic impact strip holders get bunged up on the end where they mount to the bumper. Then when you try to mount the impact strip onto the holders they slip and slide all over the place and are not tightly held.
If your impact holders are in great shape, you don't need the wire.
