My exhaust is gone

The exhaust on my 83 300SD has fallen out. I came home from school and the exhasut past the downpipe was only connected by the hangers. The pipe rusted through right around the triangle type thing at the end of the downpipe. I'm most likely going to take it to the shop but I was wondering what my options are here. I've seen posts about straight piped SDs on here and I've driven it a couple times without the exhaust but it's way too loud for me. I still have the back half of the exhaust muffler and resonators and evrything sitting in my garage and I don't plan on replacing all that. Simply reattaching and reparing what needs to be repaired. How can I handle this and about how much money am I possibly looking at? thanks

downpipe

sounds like all you need is a new downpipe. it's easy to replace yourself.
do soak the nuts at the top where the downpipe attaches to the turbo prior to removal.... otherwise pretty straightforward
cost is about $135 for the down pipe. i reused the rest of the old exhaust as well when i did that job recently. the hardest part is aligning the whole thing. recommend tightening the turbo end last.
good luck.

Hello Fellow Washinton DCer

my exhaust is also on its last legs, I'm just temporarily fixing holes w/ aluminum tape and hose clamps till I get the $$ to replace everything starting from the downpipe.

I was gonna start a thread... "Do I really need a resonator?"

Please Let me kno if you find a decent exhaust shop.

thanks,
Robert

I replaced the whole exhaust on my 1977 300D.

Bought the exhaust from Fastlane, Phil helped me out.

All together about a 2 hour job, without a lift, with the hardest part alligning the pipes correctly.

TimeValve makes an awesome stainless steel exhaust, from the downpipe all the way back....

We installed it on our '85 300SD when we had it...

I've been gone for a long time but here are the pices of my exhaust. Here are the pictures. The pipe broke right after the the assembly that connects the dowpipe to the rest of the exhaust.

DC local huh?

I have a few exhaust parts laying around (i think only for a turbo though) or if you get new ones, I've got no problem helping you put them on if you want to make the drive.

yep that's exactly where mine broke too. just get a new down pipe and bolt everything up ..(turbo end last)
the replacement comes with new flanges already on it.

nice wiring job!

The break actually occured after the downpipe on the pipe that goes to the resonators. The downpipe is fine and intact while the rest of the exhaust is laying on the garage floor. This is a bigger pic of the downpipe. The right is the rear of the car.downpipe
