Quick Question to all of you about engine fit..
I have the opportunity to buy a 1983 300TD station wagon with a perfect body, but the engine has 300K+ miles on it. Oddly enough, I have a perfectly good 300D engine sitting in my 1976, and the body on the 76 could use some fixing. So I am thinking, transpant the engine from the 1976 into the 1983. I know its a non turbo and all that, and I am not concerned. Will the trannys and all that stuff bolt right on, or is a lot of mods needed?

I think the engines differ because the original engine found on the TD has some sort of vacuum "thing" for the rear suspension, while this engine from the 76 doesn't. Somebody else can probably explain this better for you.

The cylinder head for the wagon is physically different- there is a hydraulic pump mounted on the front of the head for the rear suspension. If you do the switch (and with 300K on the car the original shocks probably leak) and check the rear shocks, they may have already been replaced with gas struts.
One of my current projects is putting a 300TD engine into a 300CD. I'm trying to find a plate and gasket to match up for covering the hole left in the head after removing the pump. .....and if you DO switch out the engine... I got dibs on the 300K one!!! I want to put a turbo diesel in a w108 next...

I am just thinking out load here (well in print anyway )
Perhaps this has been suggested before, but: Would a belt driven pump (eg PS Pump) work, instead of the 300TD head mounted SLS pump? What pressures are required? What flow is required? If the PS pump runs at too high a pressure, wouldn't a pressure regulator work to set the pressure to suit the SLS, and change the pulley to accommodate the flow (smaller = higher flow, larger = lower flow? Has anyone tried this? It may overcome the perennial problem of 300D vs 300TD in engine swaps.

Hmm
I want to totally dispose of the dastardly system and replace the rear with a normal gas strut, if this is easy and plausible. My question is if the actual engine will physically fit in easily, or if it will not connect to trans, etc.

W123 chassis engine will drop right in, W115 chassis engine will require some more work (different IP, oil filter in a different place).
A combination pump off a gasser wagon may work for the suspension, although it would need to be off a W124-- the W123 had the M110 that had the pump on the left cam. Peter

Hmm
But other than moving the oil filter, does the injection pump definitely need to be changed, or can it be kept on the engine with the rest of the W123 components?
