Salvage title 240D on ebay

I wonder if the miles are legit on this with a salvage title and all? It is located about 5 miles from me.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4532043317&category=6329&sspagename=WDVW
I emailed the seller and got this...

"I am not sure why it has a salvage title. The car doesn't show any evidence of a wreck. The previous owner told me that it might be that the car was not registered for several years."
I don't believe the non registration will make it a salvage title vehicle.

Carfax should tell you why...................

Wasn't there a thread in the last few days about Carfax being free until the 15th of March ?

I have heard that theft recovery will warrant a salvage title. Don't know if this is so or not.

Carfax doesn't go back as far as 1980.

That 240D looks like a pretty good deal right now, at $1275 with 3 hours to go - and only 5 miles from you.

Even if it's a total wreck - and it doesn't look bad from here - you wouldn't be out much.

How far does it go back? I got one on my '82 240D. Are carfax records "spotty" as you go back towards 1980 or so?

That 240D looks really fine, I believe the mileage claim is legit, based on the clean appearance of the trip odometer dials. If I had it would not complain about the small dent or tiny rust spot on the wheelwell flare. Its hard to find nice clean 123's like that.

Insurance company probably had to replace or repair something over the book value (whatever book they use these days, it may or may be the Blue Book BTW)
I just went thru this with my wife's '83 300D. Some punk(s) jumped up on the hood in the process of stealing the hood star. The end result was in excerss of $2000 to repair it. Included was a replacement hood (used), they removed cowling vents, roped up the front windshield seal, painted cowling, painted hood, installed a new hood pad and a new hood star.

They would have totalled it and I would have would up with a Salvage Title if I insisted on them using a new hood that would have added some $500 to the materials cost.

The whole experience was a nightmare! First the shop received the wrong hood, then they got a replacement hood that was dented and had to straighten it, then the hood wasn't fit properly (they were in a hurry) and it was back to the body shop for another 15 days where they decided to replace a hood hinge for some reason ( I suspect they broke the stop messing with it, it was fine when I carried it in).
After almost 2 months out of my hands it was finished but I discovered they left the car out in the rain and the back floorboard was an inch deep in water because they left a window open
Then, they admitted that an employee cracked the radiator neck while doing the hood replacement so now I have a new Behr radiator at their expense :D
I wonder why some people go along with the salvage title thing but I'll bet it is common on old Benzs these days.
