What an Idiot, or was he?

My '95 E300D was at the garage waiting for a water-pump housing to arrive from Germany, so was driving my wife's Mazda 626.

Was on my way back from Toronto to Montreal. Pulled into a Service area to fill-up, and grab a quick lunch. While filling-up, a Cube Van pulls up to the pump in back of me. As soon as he pulled-up, I smelled smoke. looked at his Van, and noticed smoke coming-out from under his hood. Not steam, but actual black acrid smoke.

The driver gets-out, approaches the fuel pump with the intention of filling-up. I point out the smoke to him and his says, yea, I have been smelling something burning for the last 10 Minutes, At that point I tell that guy to get back in his Van and to immediately drive it away from the pumps, before he blows the whole place up.

He must have found this to be a reasonable request, as to my utter amazement, this Idiot gets back into his Van, starts it up, and drives back down the highway, at high speed trailing a cloud of smoke. I knew he won't get far.

Went in to grab a quick lunch, and 20 Minutes later am on the road again. Drove for 10 Minutes when suddenly I see a bunch of Fire trucks (7 to be exact) dousing down whatever was left of that guy's Van. I slowed down and saw the guy standing there talking to a fire fighter while scratching his head in disbelief.

What an Idiot! or was he as smart as a fox? I was thinking as to what would motivate a guy to drive off under these condition. I came-up with three possibilities:

a) He could have been pulling some sort of Insurance scam.
b) Was carrying illegal or stolen cargo, and needed to get rid of it before the fire fighters arrive.
c) Plain and simple, the guy was really a total Idiot.

By the way, the water-pump housing arrived this morning from Germany. It was ordered last Tuesday. Not to bad. My car is up and running again.

Phil

YEAH! ANOTHER MERCEDES RUNNING AGAIN!!!!!!

I don't know, if he was smart or stupid... but I do know that you did the right thing by telling him to drive away! With an optimistic view, you might have saved your life along with many others!!!! Nice work!

Go PHIL!!!!!!

Anyone smelling their car burning for ten minutes, and trying to fill it up with fuel, taking no action at diagnosing or stopping the problem, is "running on a lean mixture."

Did you see that show on Spike TV a few days ago, the one where they show people doing stupid things in cars and bungee jumping craziness, well, this guy had a an engine fire and when the fire dept. shows up they pull all kinds of flammable sh-t he was actually storing whilest driving in his engine compartment. There was a propane tank and oil bottles, camping gear. It was just bizarre, and of course he just scratched his head while the Firemen asked him why he had all that stuff in there.

You are fortunate that he left and also that he didn't get p***** off at you. I have given up on telling idiots not to smoke cigarettes when at the gas pump after one such moron got p.o'd at me.
