You absolutely can get it out on a OM617.95 with the filter housing in place the oil lines hooked up and the rack damperand shut off in place. I can now remove the pump put it on the bench adjust the rack and put it back in and have the car running in under an hour. You must remove the bracket. There is a spring that goes from the bracket to the fuel lever that is a real mother to get back on, but if you have a long curved hemostat and a bright light and you squint just right and bite your tounge you can get it.

Many thanks to all the great advice and suggestions. When I went to check out and try some of the fixes, while hooking up my drip tool, fuel began flowing out of the #1 pipe! Not sure exactly why leaving it sit for a day seemed to fix it, kind of thinking that there was an air bubble or something trapped in the deep recesses of the IP? Anyway on to finnishing the re-assembly of the engine! Thanks again everyone!

Read this, while looking for the number of degrees "off " for the timing chain. Any comments?
