Turbo removal on 603
Does the turbo have to come off to remove the head? For an '86 300SDL. No trap.
It isn't a matter of difficulty, just curious as no mention is made in the manual as to removing the turbo. It does state to leave the exhaust manifold in place. I suppose it is just a matter of how heavy you want the head to be as you are bent over trying to wrangle it off. Just wondering. Thanks

You can do it either way. I left the turbo attached and was able to get the head out of the car by myself. I'm not strong by any measure. Note that I didn't say lift the head out of the car. If you do it this way, either remove the turbo oil feel line first or keep a close eye on it as you lift the head. It kinks easily.
When using the CD manual, check the CD for files with the same filename as the pdf section you're reading but with an A suffix. I find that the A suffix files generally have turbo specific information. Unfortunately the CD GUI doesn't tell you there's a turbo version of a procedure. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

Thanks sixto, I'll see how I feel tomorrow.
What do you make of the block drain plug? It is the one on passenger rear side of the engine that looks like a huge brake caliper bleed screw? It looks as though its in there real tight. But, when I pulled the head on the 4.5, I went to lift the head out and WOOSH! dumped coolant all over the floor. Would like a more controlled release this time, but maybe it is better to leave that drain plug alone.

I had no problem with the drain plug. I leaned on the plug with a deep socket and a breaker bar and it came loose. You can fit a hose to the end of the plug to direct the discharge.
