Looking for oil flow info.

Does anyone have any info on the oil flow direction to and from the oil cooler on a 603 engine? Specificly i want to know what line feeds the cooler (top or bottom).

Your hand will tell you everything you need to know. If I remember correctly the bottom line feeds and the upper is the return. The line you can hold is the return.

I didn't think of that.

Doesn't the cooler stat have to open first b4 the lines heat up?

I was hoping for an oil flow chart so i can clamp my oil temp sensor on the correct line but a little trial and error will give me the same results.
Thanks for the reply.

I also have an oil temp sensor I'd like to make functional at some point....where is the best location for it? If I just connected it to the metal line to the oil filter housing coming back from the cooler and made a good contact with some flux/solder or something would that be good enough? Its meant to be put in as a drain plug on the pan, but the sensor is way too small for the OM617 drain plug hole, I think its meant for regular spec US Gasser drain plugs. Whats the best/easiest way to make this work? I bet it would be real hard to find a sensor that fits properly into the drainplug of mine.

The easyest way would be to get another oil plug and drill and tap it so the sensor can thread into it. The only drawback is that you have the wire to deal with at oil change time.

My sensor has 1/8 npt thread and i have it theaded into a piece of 3/8x1x2 aluminum that i will hose clamp onto the oil cooler line for now. Eventualy i will drill and tap a hole in a better spot, maybe in the pan, filter housing or turbo return drian.

I was also considering just taking off the pan and bringing it to a machine shop where they could drill/tap a hole that fits the sensor as if it were just a second drain plug, then I'd never have to worry about it and I could use the other plug normally. Once its warmer I think I will do that. It'd also give me a chance to inspect the inside of the pan, the oil pump, and the oil pump intake screen and such.

Hey hatty thanks for the email attempt, i sent you a reply with my address but maybe the file is to large for hotmail.

pawoSD
Your lower pan is steel and should realy have a nipple brazed in for the sensor to thread into. The pan itself is not thick enough.
It would be great if there was plug somewere in the block that could be taken out to thread the sensor into. That is what i did on my old jetta td.
