'81 300D Transmission problem, flare 2-3
I am having transmission shift problems --- soft (flaring) 2-3 shift, late shift 2-3 (high RPM), and harsh 1-2, 3-4 shift. This is after I checked/repaired vacuum system and have proper vacuum to modulator e.g. approx 0-15 " from full to no throttle. I also cranked up the modulator pressure to virtually eliminate flare, but this made the other problems more pronounced, and 2-3 is still very soft
.I have read many discussions reguarding a Bowden cable and it's adjustment. The only problem is I can't seem to find one on my car ! I have found in the ATSG book for 722.1-722.2 transmission a note buried on pg. 106 that says "Important Note: 1980-1983 300D and 240D with a vacuum modulator have NO TV LINKAGE".Does this mean there is no bowden cable on this transmission? Is K1 just taking too long to engage? Is it clutch pack wear, or leaking? Is there anything I can measure before tearing this thing out of the car? If I need to rebuild or replace this transmission, is it possible to put a newer 5sp version in (the car is none too quick and rev's pretty high at 75mph so I'm thinking a 5sp might be a help ).David P.S. Why the hell is diesel so much more expensive than gasoline (in California it's as much as premium gasoline $2.40/gallon?! I thought less refining meant it would be cheaper !
