Oil all over left side of engine

I have not asked a question for a long time as everything has been going great. However I have a problem now that has me stumped. Last weekend on a trip I noticed the oil pressure starting to go down at highway speed. Stopped as soon as noticed and when I looked under the hood the entire left side of the engine was soaked with oil. I could not see the source but was down about 5 qts. So I topped it off and drove a little more. No more leak was seen the whole way home (200+ miles). Cleaned up the mess and then took it for a good run on the highway. Only oil leak I can find is coming from the front head bolt on the left side of the head. Very small leak, just enough to show a wet spot. Will look further this weekend but is it possible for a head bolt to come loose or is it more possible to be broken? Car is running fine, no miss, no oil in water in oil. Why did it blow oil at 80mph but does not at 65-70 mph? The 5qt loss happened in about 20 miles, since that no loss at all besides a slow seep.

Could the leak be from an oil cooler hose? A leak from a hose can be intermittent, depending on whether oil thermostat is open or closed.

Be carefull here, this sounds like an oil cooler hose. These things kill many MB's.

at 80MPH your turning around 3500 RPM

If your going 85-90 well then your close to 4000 RPM, with the well engineered Mercedes Oil pump, I'm pretty sure you were way above 3 bar.

If you got a little blowby then maybe it was shooting out the valve cover vent.

I'm sure if you clean it up, then warm it up, then drive like a bat outta hell, getting the RPM's up close to red line, then stop and look, you'll find it.

Another thing that I've done is put some aluminum foil inbetween things so you can see which side of teh foil get wet.

good luck

mespe,

That's why the engine has an oil pressure relief valve.

Both hoses were replaced last month. I thought at first it had to be a hose but after cleaning everything off and with no oil anywhere the only place I can find any leak after a 75mph run is around the first head bolt on the left side up front. Oil cooler lines were hot so I know oil was running through them. Going to see if the bolt is loose this weekend but I just don't see how one could work loose, or break for that matter.

On the 617 engine, the oil pressure relief valve does not open until the pressure reaches 7 bar. (Not to be confused with the oil filter bypass valve which opens at 3.5 bar.) So normal oil pressure can be well above the maximum gauge indication.
