How would you get to them? I was never able to. I had to take the intake manifold gasket off to get at them. If #1 fails, it is easy but the rest will take some work. Intake gaskets are about $10-15 a shot. I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking, is this the last failure or is there more? Well to tell you the truth, I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being as this 606 intake manifold gasket, and will cost between 10 to 15 dollars, you've got to ask yourself a question: do I feel lucky? Well do ya, punk?

My 606 after 60K was fine as far as the chambers went. I broke the plug off at the threads because of galvanic corrosion. I have since put tons of anti-sieze on the plug body (not on the heat tips) and intend to take them out once a year just to be sure. When I took the head off, the machine shop said it was pretty clean.

What is this 'reamer' you all speak of...

Are you talking about a tap to chase the threads? Or are you talking about a special MB tool for cleaning out the prechambers? I haven't used either of those things in my last replacement, but if its important, I'll use them on my next replacement.

In terms of replacement tools.. I used a stubby 3/8" ratchet with a pivot head and the 8mm and 12mm 3/8" sockets. No extensions or wobble joints. Just small hands, and a stubby ratchet. (Story of my life... )

peace,
sam

http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes.htm and search for the word reamer.

Here is a pic: http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes/mb601589005300.jpg

I'm not intersted in the story of your life with the stubby rachet. That sounds like a personal problem that no Mercedes tool will fix. Have you tried that stuff they advertise, Enzyte, I believe? Or how about a strap on?

Thanks for the part ID, guys, and the good price, Jimmy Joe.

Now I just need to find an appropriate swedish-made pump attachment and I'll be good to go.

peace,
sam

I am debating buying that reamer myself. Just need to use it once, ya know?
If you do get one Sam, make sure you follow directions about putting grease on it to catch carbon, then "puffing" the rest of the loose carbon out by turning over the motor a little. You don't want to trap that stuff in the cylinder.

aklim compared to a 603 the intake manifold on a 606 is childs play to pull off. If I remember correctly the glow plugs cost about $15 each and with one dead the car should still start. So replacing them every year is a little pricey. I would replace them every 3-4 years though. If a glow plug dies you can reuese the intake manifold gaskets since you should replace them every year when you ream the glow plugs.

I meant that I would take them out once a year just to make sure there is no issue when I have to remove them in the future.

Also when I take them out as planned, I would wire brush the threads and put fresh anti-sieze on it.
