A simple thanks would be nice...

It seems to be occuring increasingly more often that there are members amongst us who just like to take advantage of others by PM'ing for info or help and just simply not returning a simple "thanks" after the time was taken to do so.
I have had this happen quite a few times recently and I will no longer respond to PM's from members I have not had contact with before.
What's so hard about just saying thanks?

I've found this out to be somewhat true as well. I don't expect any thanks, but I sure do wonder if the advice was taken and whether it was successful. We provide advice on this forum with the gallant hope that someone benefits from it. I sure don't blow smoke on here to make myself feel better.

BTW, this applies to threads on the forum as well. If you take advice from a post and it works for you, kindly return to the thread and advise. It benefits everybody.

'Asked for' thanks doesn't mean anything anyway.
"I'll take my toys and just go home" comes in many different shapes and forms doesn't it?
Ya know, I've never recieved any thanks either!! Oh wait, I don't think I've ever been able to help anyone.....

Define "take advantage of". I agree that a thank you for your help is nice, even courteous, but why is it necessary?

I'll help you only if you properly thank me doesn't seem to fit in with the spirit of this forum.

Judging from your number of posts where you have helped other members makes me believe that you offer that help out of the goodness of your heart and the feeling you get from that is your reward.

I always thank members who help me.....there are a couple here I have disagreements with on certain issues but they have offered help graciously and they were thanked in return....I try to always thank people for their help or advise.

lietuviai,

I do understand what you are saying and it has happened to me for the last five years that I have been posting on mshop. There are a few members that ask questions regularly and correspond regularly, so they may not specifically say thanks for a particular response, but they are constantly apologizing for the private mail and thanking me in general.

It's the ones whom I've never heard of before and never hear from again that seem to be the discourteous ones. It's like they just stop here for help, get it or not, and then run out of town without so much as saying goodbye.

All that said, however, it is very unfortunate, but I think it just goes along with the decaying courtesy in our society. I was born in 1949 and a victim of being raised with Southern Hospitality in the fifties and sixties. If I were to not say please and thank you or not refer to an adult as sir or ma'am I had trouble sitting down for awhile. I also opened doors for ladies or girls and was taught to wait my turn.

In contrast to that, when I hear a person of any age address someone as sir or ma'am it catches my attention because it is so rare although I do it consistently myself. My college student daughter works at a dry cleaners while going to college. I stop by there from time to time and I am quite proud when I hear her addressing her customers with courtesy including sir and madam for the adults older than her. She also counts out change. When was the last time you had a clerk count out your change instead of just telling you how much it is and slamming it in your hand?

It amazes me how many people in public will just cut in front of you at a salad bar or buffet, or bump into you without even saying excuse me. There are more and more people that I see in public that will just walk straight over you and expect you to move out of their way, never saying excuse me or offering any common courtesy whatsoever. I've thought before that if they had been raised by my Mom they probably would not have survived childhood.

I like to think that most of us here on mshop are a cut above the average person on the street that fails to use common courtesy, but I'm sure there are even plenty of us here that forget our manners at times. Since I am not in the same room with all of you when I'm typing along and corresponding via email, I might be guilty of such discourtesy myself. If so, I offer thanks to all those who have helped me.

Have a great day and thanks,
