1993 300SD Transmission gear selector indicator bulb

How do you get access to the bulb (1.2 watt) for the transmission gear selector illumination?

remove ashtray- find two screws which go into the wood around the shift lever [torx]. the thread points to the rear of car & the head of the screw toward the engine. there is a brass insert in the wood that the screws go into. I removed mine and one of the inserts just turned in the wood. If that happens you will have a very hard time. I worked several hrs trying everything and finally got it out. the wood was split but before reinstalling I glued the brass insert back into the wood. the wood was split where when glued back together but the damage is underneath and not visible on top. the bulb is in the front of the box surrounding the shift lever. good luck
