Can you put a turbo on a 1983 240-D that didn't come with one. I would like to be able to pull out into traffic with out haveing to fear for my life. :D

Try a search.....this subject has been discussed before...the answer is yes....and no.....it has been done...no its not exactly easy and parts aren't exactly common....but the tradoff is engine life.

It's been done but probably not cheaper than selling your 240D and getting a 300D or 300Dt.

I'm going to have to drive one of these 240's I keep hearing about. Mine is faster than most customers 300D's (at least when they first bring them to me.)

If it's an automatic, I can see it being an issue, but with a manual, there's no reason you can't get that car to be a screamer.

As for the turbo, there was a complete FACTORY APPROVED turbo kit for the 240D (allegedly for high-altitude use) that has an "alda" that is mounted to the IP and compensates for the fuel and boost very well. There are no longevity issues with that kit as many are still running around Europe with that kit installed on 240's.

Grimgaunt, a member here, has one of these German kits in his basement. I've seen it. They included EVERYTHING, down to the last nut and bolt, lines, controllers, etc.

He tried to sell it here and on ebay, but most people didn't know WTH it was and wouldn't bid on it thinking it was just some hack-job turbo kit, so he removed it.

Anyway, one day I plan to buy it from him and install onto another 240 (mine's so fast it's scary as it is!)

Does that kit have the oil cooling annular ring pistons and oil squirters in it ?

Of course! And a small rechargeable robot that installs the pistons and squiters in the block while it's in the car!!

Gee...., remember millions of years ago (oh wait..., it was less than 30) when some diesels had turbos and no oil squirters? Gosh, I guess they just had to adjust the boost and fuels levels to a point that the obviously worthless POS engine could tolerate the boost.

Remember, engines will see a 2-4PSI of effective boost just moving from 8k ft elevation to sea level. The engines were WAY overbuilt to take it, even if they don't have cooling jets on the pistons.

Not sure about anyone else's, but mine is not so fragile that it's going to blow-up going down to sea level, so 4-6psi of mechanical boost at my elevation will exact the same toll on it as sea level driving, but will not have the gasping-for-air hesitation it normally would while mountain driving.

I believe the turbo 240 available stock in India has the annular ring pistons...

Built from the factory as a turbo, it probably does.

The pistons are all likely the same except for the clearance cut out on the skirt.

Maybe I should order one for the 240 and one for the 300DT and do a comparison?

What we need is a guinea pig engine (Phil at P&S has promised to donate one to Colo Biodiesel when they get one in) to boost the hell out of and see what happens. I can probably do a test stand setup and run enough sensors to come up with some useable data on it.
