Symptom of transmission failure?

I was in a parking lot, and I was trying to maneuver out of a space. I could swear that when I put the transmission in reverse that the car started moving forwards ever so slightly, so i put the gear selector back into park, and then back into reverse and thhe car did start to move backwards, BUT right after I put the transmission in reverse the second time, immediately after it engaged, I heard a grinding noise eminating from the rear of the car. It was alarming to say the least. It disappeard after a few seconds. So then as I shifted from reverse to drive, after it engaged I heard the same noise again. And if I remember correctly, II could feel some sort of vibration in the brake pedal when the noise was present. My brake pads dont seem bad, the lights not on, and braking power is perfect. They arent too old either.

Has anybody experienced this noise/vibratiion? It could almost be described as the noise a rusty worn out spring would make if it were to be compressed. The noise happens right after the transmission engages when going into reverse, or coming out of it into a drive gear.

If this is a symptom of the beginning of the end of my
tranny, I couldnt be happier. I need an excuse to throw in a new tranny and rebuild my driveshaft while I am at it. These 2 thhings are thhe only mechanical bits of my 300D that havent been touched.

I am planning on taking a trip this weekend and I dont want somthing to happen while Im on the road, so I am going to drop by my indie before I leave to have him check it out. But any comments/info. would be greatly appreciated!

Could be the torque of the driveline moving when the car enguages into reverse.. motor mounts, transmission mounts, etc. Could also be your brake pads or parking brake shoes making a funny noise. I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Thanks Turbodiesel!

I doubt it is anything tooo bad. I had just washed thhe car, and had sprayed wheel cleaner on the wheels and some of thhat fluid got in behind the wheels. That, combined with the flash of cold weather we are having probably have something to do with the noise. All mounts- engine, transmission, and engine shocks are relatively new, having been replaced within the last 15K miles. The rear shocks are less than 200 miles old. I doubt new shocks could contribute to thhe noise, but what do i know...

Thanks again!

I would!! Noise coming from the drivetrain is never good news. If you are traveling far I would definately have the drivetrain checked out. Have the mechanic pay particular attention to the driveshaft flex disc.

I had the same noise but when I went quicker in reverse and released the accelerateo the car felt like the brakes kicked in and the car just stopped! After this the car had a hard time going in reverse and also in drive but I did manage to get home travelling slowly and with an embarassing loud noise like metal clunking together. I have an 89 560SEL with 150k miles. I was told by one mech that it was the tranny that had to replaced. I have yet to get a second opinion

tranny

noises would be muffled i think. sounds like springs rubbing sound more like driveshaft issues. or even suspension bushings.
