Question Dave

Have you noticed any "wind noise" with the trim removed?

The plastic trim, as well as the windlace is purely cosmetic. The rubber door seal is what provides the seal against water and air.

Actually I do have some water leak in a carwash, but I have a 2 inch chunk of door seal missing. Door seals are on the TO DO list.

Pricey aren't they, especially when you have to do all 4!

Before and after photos. Looks like I will not be putting the old one back one even if I want to. Very brittle and fragile.

window molding

I ripped that stuff off the first day I had my car. It was wrinkled. I do not have any leaks , but the rubber is good. the paint is in really nice shape under that molding. I think it looks cool. The molding looked like some sort of american after market thing. i bet it didn;t come on the euro models, but I am guessing.

They are available at the dealer. $100 each.

Dave

I want to correct this post. With the MBCA discount at the local dealer the tirm pieces are $30 each. (7/11/06). I'm considering this replacement.

The main reason that these parts all wrinkle up the way they do, is they were made of lightly plasticized PVC. What little plasticizer that was used has long since left the building due to the high heat of 20 plus summers. The natural state of un-plasticized PVC is a hard and brittle plastic, so that is what we mostly all have to contend with. Have only seen one car with decent window reveals and that was stored inside summer and winter and was in an area with low heat summers.

I had a few stubborn spots that did not come off with 409 but the rest of the frame was just dirty.

To remove the weather strip adhesive, Use 3M weather strip adhesive remover. Can be purchased at any auto parts store.

what i affectionately refer to as the elephant skin interior option. i am going to remove mine now that i have seen pics.

speaking of seals what should one expect to pay for seals?

I also need to replace both my windshield and rear window seals. cracked to hell.

Thumbs up

out with my bag o' trim clips from ************** fixing the trim on the fender i decided to remove my elephant skin trim and reveal the lovely mercedes thistle green paint.

took all of 5 minutes to do. any door seal that came out was easy enough to tuck back into place.

Question adhesive residue

lofat, was there any glue residue? I saw on other posts that it could be a PITA to remove.

There was no glue residue, just 26 years of dust. Not that bad really. What I thought was adhesive turned out to be a small blemish in the paint. Other than a couple of spots the rest looks brand new. I will not be replacing those things, espically at 100.00 a pop.

Mine had glue at the front section of the door. Not to much. The 3M weather strip adhesive will remove it. The remover just takes a little patients. wet a rag and rub the glue. It slowly saturates the glue and it comes off like rubber cement.
