To bad you don't have a lot of money to spend. I salivated over a Toureg V10 TDI I saw in the Costco parking lot. 5.0 liter V10 TDI engine. That is probably better than a lot of full size pickups if the transmission is strong enough! What a great little diesel SUV for pulling a trailer if it has the right suspension and tranny. Not sure I would recommend pulling a trailer behind any light weight vehicle but common sense says the 300D would probably tolerate it better. Only advantage of the passat is the manual which is a big advantage when trying to pull a trailer. I would spend 7000 on a car and use the other 1000 and find a cheap late 70's or early 80's pickup and use just to pull the trailer. Good luck
