is it just me or does the green coolant seem to cause alot of problems? i know they say not to use it in the benzes. i recently did the head gaskets on a friends camero and the coolant passages were gummed up with what looked like green boogers. i completely drained it and filled it with 2 bottles of radiator flush and water. i had him drive it for a day to school and work with the heater on and then we drained it and refilled it with orange coolant. has anyone else had this problem/encountered this?

Our 83 had been running on green when we got it, and was fine, always runs with the needle on the 80c mark (even cooler than mine does) we drained it all out and flushed it a couple times with water and some mb coolant, then I made a good 50/50 mix of mb coolant and filled it, still runs at 80c just like before, except now about 90-95% of the coolant is mb stuff instead of the green, at some point I'm going to really flush it out, but its not urgent.

Mine's got green too. Nothing wrong, cools great, temperatures remain nominal. I will do a citric acid flush however and use correct coolant when I get a round tuit.

I have asked at MBZ in WestOz and they do not know about the Orange Coolant. They warrant their work and only use green coolant. They do, however, charge an arm & a leg for it.

The problem is people are lazy and cheap and don't change it. If you flush the green coolant every 2-3 years like you are supposed to I bet you would never have a problem with it.

Some diesels require (SCA) Supplemental Coolant Additive. I haven't put it in mine but I think that it is a prudent thing to do. I suspect that the green stuff with SCA is about the same thing as the orange stuff. Note that Dexcool is not the orange stuff. I need to flush and change mine also.

Antifreeze is recyclable.

Actually Dex-Cool is orange - kinda orange/amber. The green stuff with SCA is just that - adding SCA doesn't make it Extended Life Coolant.

I recently spoke with a lube engineer at Texaco/Chevron (for an article I'm doing unrelated to MBs). He said that the green stuff with its silicone anti-corrosives only lasts about a year before allowing the ethylene glycol to begin breaking down into oxalic acid. The Organic Acid Technology allows Dex-Cool and other ELCs to keep their corrosion protection for 5 years. Change your coolant when you're supposed to!

I would not recommend Dex-Cool for anything. If you're warranty requires Dex-Cool, then get an aftermarket anti-freeze that meets the GM specs.

Kmaysob, the "green boogers" you reported finding are probably remnants of earlier Dex-Cool coolant mixing with green coolant. I've witnessed many cooling systems full of Dex-Cool clumps.
