W124 E300D exhaust

hi,

I looked at the exhaust on the E300D and it seems that it is one piece from the cat-back. The centre and rear muffler are one piece. If I need to replace the rear muffler, I can just cut it off and replace it with a new one, OR would it be a waste of money? Would it make more sense to spend extra money and buy the whole exhaust from cat-back?

Im asking this since the tailpipe is slowly rusting away at the welds from the rear muffler. There are already small holes at the tailpipe weld. The exhaust system is in good shape, however there is major rust at almost all the welds. I was wondering if there is anything that I could do to slow down the oxidation.

Also, I was thinking, if I will get a new exhaust system, I want to paint it over again and add extra coating at the welds. Would that help to prolong the life of the exaust?

Exhaust

Exhaust systems corrode from the inside out.
If the corrosion has eaten trough welds, the pipes are in bad condition inside.
Suggest you replace the bad sections as units, especially if you plan to keep the car.
