I read in a british auto mag a couple of months ago that AMG is working on a 3.0L turbo-diesel and a 5.0L twin turbo-diesel.

I hope no one is offended by this comment. Keep in mind that I love diesels.
AMG souping up a diesel is like training a mule for the Kentucky Derby. Mules are great work animals, but poor race horses. If you want power and speed use a spark ignited engine, not compression ignited. Merry Christmas, |

This is a very nice and fast mule. But just think about how much nicer and faster it would be had they put this much money and training into a horse!

Hey just look at the torque figures of the new diesels that MB is making. Now imagine a AMG diesel. Think of the torque. I woulden't mind having a fast diesel MB.

Overall I agree with Larry but, Mercedes has built some pretty fast diesels in the past. Remember the C111? In 1976 and 1978 Mercedes built C111-II's that set world speed records using five cylinder turbo diesel engines.
This is NOT your typical diesel...

The C111 cars were used to develop the modern diesel engines. The reason we have these great engines in our cars, is because MB spent the money in research with these cars as a big part of those programs.
I don't want anyone to misunderstand me. I'm a diesel fan, particularly a MB/Cummins/Ford tractor diesel fan. But, if you want maximum speed and performance, you will get more from a gasoline engine of the equivalent size. If you want torque to pull 80,000 pounds down the road, you get it from a diesel. Yeah, but it's kinda cool if your diesel is faster than other gas engined cars.

My Diesel 300SD was faster that the gasoline cars near Vail CO at about 10,000 feet altitude. At 60 MPH and 4000RPM in third gear, I was passing everything on the road. Sure was fun and it doesn't happen very often.

P.E.,
I'll bet that was a change. The turbo diesel automatically compensating for altitude is an advantage that a gas engine would not be able to immitate. Merry Christmas, |

Well, I was right. There will be upcoming AMG Diesels. In this months british mag EVO, they have an interview with the head of AMG, Domingos Piedade. "What you will be driving, tough, is a new range of AMG Diesels- high performance versions of Mercedes' new-generation common-rail engines that will give, says Piedade, astonishing performance."

You weren't driving I-70 Vail CO the day I was there in my Saab 900SPG (powered by Garrett Air Research).
Although the Turbo Saab is lightyears faster, my 300SDL Sound Better! |

MBenz, tell me more, was this during development that they had cracked heads and all that? What else?

Well I think they got rid of those problems or else the CDI's would not be on the road right now. Besides they have probably done more research and testing on the CDI's because of that. It should be OK.
