Electrical problems with 123's common?
I am trying to figure out if I have a slow battery drain somewhere or if the benz and its clock (and any other devices) use a higher amount of juice than most cars when they are parked. The only alteration is an aftermarket stereo reusing all the OEM wires that I did cleanly so I do not believe it is the stereo. What has happened three times now is that eventually even after driving all day the battery will not have enough juice to start the car. Turns out the battery is generally low and after a good long charge I can usually get another month out of it. I still have not figured out what is wrong with my glow plugs/electrical problem (new relay but still no juice to the GP's) so I have been using extra battery in the morning to get it started so the problem is more prevailant now. I cannot remember how to check for a slow leak - do I use the Ohm Meter again? Any idea what is factory? Between the glow plug problem and this slow leak (which I think has probably been a problem for a long time - long before I owned it) and the power windows and some other little quirks I a little discouraged electrically speaking My land cruiser is undergound major operations and fuel issues so I have not been able to get it in to do any major diagnosing with the benz. Plus my voltmeter works but is minorly f'd. So I guess I need to get a new one of these too.

Sounds like an alternator thats about to go south. The bat light is notorious for not working to let you know you have a charging problem. you can pick up a cheap multi meter for less then 20 bucks that can check the volts,ohm and amps. Look for one that can measure dc amps, usualy 10 amps.
When the car is running you should see at least 13 to 13.5 volts when the glow plugs turn off. To check for current draw to see if something is draining the battery: Turn off all electrical loads including closing the door so the interior light is not on. Pull the neg terminal off the bat, set the meter to dc amps and connect one end to the bat and the other end to the terminal. You should see something less than .250 amps if everything is turned off.

I agree with the aforementioned post.
However, the reading for current draw, with everything off but the clock, should be about 60mA (milliamps) or less. 250mA will drain the battery in a few days. |

On my 123 and 116 model, I had similar problems and in both cases, it was the trunk light.
Removed the bulb and problem went away. Replaced one switch but have not got around to the other. Just left it's bulb out for now. |

I think the alternator is a good place to start also. I responded to your elect problem when you first posted it, but maybe I wasn't to helpful . I think all of the above are good places to start. look for anything that could be running when the car is off like the above mentioned trunk light. If you are still haveing the problem after checking these things out you will be forced to do a systematic search of your electrical system. If you are pretty good with DC power systems then you might be able to find the problem, but if not, it's time to take it to the shop. I know this isn't what you want to here but sometimes these things can get very indepth. I would love to have it here, but with out more info or the car its self this is the best I got.

1) Battery that won't hold a charge (for whatever reason)
1a) Check the alternator 2) Pull the fuses one at a time to isolate the circuits (when the car starts correctly, you've found the circuit that is pulling too much juice. 3) An aftermarket amp or radio that has an internal short (its happened to me). I'd check the battery first.

Voltage Regulator Failure? that would share the same symptoms as an alt failing wouldn't it?
I would personally check that first as that is a 25 dollar part as opposed to the cost of a new alt. Not that I know how to diagnose these cars for anything - i really don't, I just tend to read a lot about them as it's still new to me. Point being that I read some info on mercedes source and when I read your thread - reminded me.
