The 120 mph speedometer is correct for an '84 SD or D. They were 85 mph prior to '83 because of the US 55mph national speed limit. The reason for the double nickle was the oil embargo of '73 and resultant run up of gas and diesel prices. De javu.

The rear defog also uses a relay. Its the silver cans in the fuse block just ahead of the fuses. Its the one that is closest to the fender and closest towards the windshield. Try substituting one of the other ones and see if it works. HTH Mike

I just fixed mine. I bought the gear from www.odometergears.com for $25 I highly recommend doing this. It beats $150 for a rebuilt unit. If you do this you need to check the first large gear and clean out any remaining pieces of the smaller gear that may be in the teeth. You have to pry the brass fitting on the shaft off. I used a small screwdriver and gently pried a little. turned the shaft 1/2 turn and gently pried again. Repeat this process until the fitting loosens up. Once it's loose it comes right off. The new gear is pushed on by hand. One end is tapered to make installation easier. Danny

You can have my whole working 0-85MPH speedometer for 25 bucks if you want it. The only thing it doesn't have is a needle on the end of the shaft. The rest is there, and VERY working
