The Slip

A friend o mine wants to sell me a set of Chrome rims for my 86 300sdl. only problem is the rims are too big for my car. the tire guy told me all i need are slips to bring the rims about 5 inches away from the frame of the car. has anyone here ever heard of "the slip" and is it a good idea?

Chrome is too much bling. Stick with the stock ET25.

From what I know, ANYTHING that messes with the suspension/wheel geometry is NOT A GOOD THING and will mess up your ride, comfort and handling.

It might look cool, but won't perform worth a ****.

What the heck is a "slip"?....................could he be meaning a spacer...more specificly a hub centric spacer?

Still not a good idea.

I'm sure that he means "spacers".

Spacers can be used to properly position a wheel within the confines of the wheel well and to avoid the tie rods, but, the design and quality of the spacer is critical for proper function. The typical spacer is a POS and will give you far more grief with unbalance than you could ever imagine.

Furthermore, if the wheel is too wide, it will cause the tire to contact the fenderwell on full spring compression. I'm sure you don't want this.

The cost for a very well made set of spacers to do the task for which you intend is about $400. I'm doubtful whether you can justify the cost.

I used spacers for my rims but I only needed 5mm. I hope he was wrong when he said 5 inches.

thanks for the input
i think i'll take the advice and leave things the way they are. however those are some nice chrome rims. i will see if i can trade them in.

The guy didn't mean a 5" spacer but he used that as a reference point off the frame, which really isn't right. IIRC most newer MB wheels are around 40mm offset and ours are more like 22mm or so, meaning the rest has to be made up with a spacer.
