Most of the few times I have had to defuse a ranting idiot I have let him go and say his peace and then say something like "I'm sorry, I don't really understand, could you repeat that?" After the second time "gee, I still don't understand, could you explain that differently?" or "I don't think I heard that right", etc. This requires them to think more about what they are really saying, does not escalate anything, yet gives no bully or loudmouth any satisfaction at all. ohmmmmmmm.

He's probably going to report me to the state for idiling my car for over 2 minutes in front of a store. Why do some people just live to be idiots?
Probably someone with asthma that heard on 60 minutes that old diesels are killing people. Tell them to lose weight, it will probably be the best thing for their problems.

The real polluters, the power companies, want to crush your car and buy the pollution rights for it. They wrote the legislation that allows them to do that and paid the congress to pass the laws.

Some guy with a 123 diesel wagon gave me grief about my idling `84 300D at the diesel pumps at a Sunoco in Portsmouth, NH. I had just driven hard at 75-80 from N.J. and wanted to let the turbo cool down. He was such a ********* I figured that he did not deserve an explanation.

That was almost obscene. I know there are jerk benz owners too. Some people just have too much free time on their hands.
I've only had my car for a couple of years now but I've never shut down at convenience stores or fuel stations, haven't heard a peep yet.
I drive school busses part time. We fuel up at the city yard next door with police and fire. Fueled up a few weeks ago and next to me was one of the cities fire rescue vehicles fueling on the other side. They came over to chat and look over the bus to familiarize themselves with it I guess in case of a future bus rescue. Both of us idling and fueling mind you. If I actually shut off and restarted every day each time I stopped for a few minutes(5 min. tops) your talking about 15 to 20 starts each day. Compound that over a month's time and your talking about alot of unnecessary wear in my book. My 2 cents.

So? I'd let you crush my car for the right price. You bring 30K to me and this car is yours to do as you please. I have no problems with them wanting to crush cars if they will pay for it. There is a price for most anything. You don't have to sell anyways if you don't want to. Now, if they wrote the law that says they can make you a token offer and you have to accept, I can understand. IOW, if they paid $10K for my car and I have to accept then I have a problem with it. Like I said, make me an offer I cannot refuse and I won't refuse.

If you ask me politely, yes, I will give you an explaination that is polite also. Like a bank, if you put money in savings, you get more money out. You bounce a check and they will tack on a huge fee. HOWEVER, I don't owe you anything. You are not my father and I am not your 12 yo son. I return goodness with more goodness. Consider it an interest fee. I return evil with even more evil. Consider it a penalty fee. Why does anyone feel we owe some stranger an explaination? WTF? Who do you think you are? If you are a cop in an official capacity, I have no choice but to offer you an explaination. If you are Joe Blow and are rude, I will unzip my pants and tell you to speak into the mike.

Sorry, my mistake, punched the wrong button. "turbodiesel" is the original poster.

Your reply is great. You should also send it to someone like comedian George Carlin, sounds like something he could use.

really, i've never heard of a law limiting idle time. is this for real???
I read somewhere that in NJ, it is illegal to allow a commercial vehicle to idle or remain parked in a residential area for any period of time-of course, the fat a$$ was probably too stupid to recognize the difference between a Benz and a semi...

Be that as it may, there is no need to be rude about it. If you politely tell me to shut off the engine because you feel the sky will fall if I don't, I can assure you taht you will get farther than if you come yelling at me.

If you'd just have time to think about at the time, this could have been alot of fun........
Scenario #1: (assuming this is a strip mall or another business close at hand, especially something like a hair salon, tanning spa or get this: a "Curves For Women" or other workout place): OK, you say, "OH! I just saw that jerk go over to (fill in the blank) "Curves", how rude of them to keep it running while they work out". Then they trot their fat asss over to Curves to make a jerk out of themselves while you scoot on outta there while they do it. Maybe there is a bar nearby with a big bouncer, tell the guy it belongs to the bouncer over there at "Chubby Chucks Tavern"
Scenario #2: "WOW I can't believe they did that, I don't know where they went, but I think we oughtta teach that guy a lesson, let's go drive it around back and hide it on them, I'll do it myself, what the Hell". Hop in the car, drive it like you're going to ditch it, then you can choose, drive it around back and just keep driving around and don't come back, or you can flip him off when you're out of "fat guy trotting" range, or just peel out of the lot, maybe he'll think the car just got ripped off, if he's really dumb.

I remember seeing truckers parked at Denny’s who slept in their cabs. In the winter time, they just left their diesels running.

Overeating is a serious strain on our national health care cost. If he’s really that civic minded, he should lose some weight. Do you run into the local buffet and ask, “Whose plate is that?!” I think not. That would be the action of a loudmouth idiot. IMHO, the first thing to do to improve the world would be to eliminate the loudmouth idiots like that guy.

Big business pollutes. They get vouchers to pollute. When they have used up their vouchers, do they stop polluting? No, they simply buy more vouchers from those companies that haven’t used theirs (companies that were given more than they needed to operate). Financial viability is what regulates the whole shebang. And that is supposed to be okay for the HUGE polluters, but we diesel drivers who idle at 1/6 fuel usage as gassers are not afforded the same. Hypocrites!

Now that I think about it, I’d just kick ‘em in the nuts.

I didn't know it was against the law to idle a car.

He said yes...and I said well how would you like for me to kick your a_ _ around my yard like a beach ball? How would you like those apples? He gave me the finger..and I told him to learn two new words...I'm full...Old frito hasnt spoken to me since...Does anyone know what I could safely add to my tank to create forest-fire thick smoke each morning?

Start car normally then shut off and restart but don't wait for the glow plug light.
For military smoke screen type smoke drop raw diesel onto hot exhaust manifold...don't forget to wear a spacesuit before doing this.
