I wish ODOT (Oregon Department of Transportation) had something where people reported smoking cars.

My 300SD will lay down a fat inky one anytime I want it to...and I usually have to once or twice a day depending on how bad people feel they want that car length spot in front of me.

My reaction to that guy would have been mixed...if I was in a bad mood...a few expletives might have rolled out of my mouth. If I was in a good mood...I'd walk out to my car and stand next to it and wait for him to key it...while it idled.

Either way most people are not worth the time if they are going to come at you with hostility...around here my biodiesel sticker gets me enough kudo points that I could get a nice gang of hippie liberal art students to drown them out with watercolor paint, THC, and a healthy dose of babble.

Putting used motor oil into your tank must increase the stink and smoke factor for your friendly neighbor?? Does it?

Hmmm. I never knew it was illegal anywhere to idle your engines. What if you are first starting your car of the morning to warm it up? Is that illegal as well?

I think he (the man that charged in the shop) could have been a better sport about it, instead of busting in there and boiling him out because of it.

Some people have no manners at all.

Some places it is illegal to idle the car for more than 5 mins. Madison was considering doing that. That is for warm ups specifically

i think it's truly odd that there are laws in some places that tell you not to idle a passenger vehicle. just bizarre.

*cough* European Big Cities *cough*

It all adds up eventually. I am kinda drawn on the whole shut it down/leave it running ordeal. It seems like around here....its so cold and wet most of the time that smog is never an issue and its nice to drop into a warm car out of the weather. Places like LA...I can see the benifits.

If I have to chew the air...chances are I will shut her down

I have to wonder how idling compares to startup in terms of fuel consumption in our cars specifically. I know there's a certain point up to which idling would use less fuel than a startup (if I understand the concept of governors, a full dose of fuel is allowed/required at startup, right?). I've heard for some trucks its 30 seconds of idling = one startup. Anyone know what it would be for a passenger car? A lot of EPA documents state that idling causes more damage to the engine over time than startup/shutdown, but I never entirely trust the EPA. Sometimes if I go into a store to grab a coffee (a 2-5 minute endeavor) I feel its better for the car to leave it idling for three minutes than shut off/start up ... especially if I'm running two or three such errands in a row.

It's hard to get good information about this, because those who want to idle will justify it, while on the other side of the arguement is the EPA, and honestly I don't put much stock in a lot of what they come up with (obviously some of it is legitimate, but some of it seems arbitrary).

At this point, within reason, I'm thinking about what is most "healthy" for my car. Neither of the states I live in have idling laws, so I guess I don't have to worry that much.

If the discussion of fuel consumption is eliminated, it's always better to leave it idling, within reason. Each time you shut it down, you have wear on the glow plugs, wear on the glow plug relay, wear on the ignition switch, wear on the starter, wear on the engine due to no oil pressure for a second or two.

If it's under five minutes, I never shut these down. If it's real cold out, I may lock them up and leave them idling in the parking lot for up to 20 minutes.

Isn't idling fuel consumption very low for diesel passenger engines??

How about getting stuck in a tunnel? My car idled and idled . It took me 1 hour 20 minutes to get thru the Holland Tunnel once. My veggie stink mixed w/ the tour bus 2 cars ahead of me must have made the whole tunnel sick.

I learned the hard way with the Holland myself. I never cross the Hudson river without listening to traffic reports for the 30 minutes prior to making the decision on which crossing to use. Unlike most, the reports are quite accurate (almost real time) and you can adjust your route accordingly. I came back from the GTG and heard a 25 minute backup developing on the turnpike approach to the Holland...........made the change to 1-9 and the skyway...........and was in the tunnel in under five minutes.

I hope your experience was not in the middle of August.

For military smoke screen type smoke drop raw diesel onto hot exhaust manifold...don't forget to wear a spacesuit before doing this.
