vacuum pump problems
I replaced the diaphram in the vacuum pump on my 1980 240D less than a year ago.
I replaced it again last month. Once again it leaks oil into the air cleaner, power brakes don't work, the engine won't shut off, and the door locks don't work. I called Phil to order another diaphram. The hose from the brake resovior to the clutch cylinder was bad. It was leaking brake fluid onto the front of the brake booster. Could brake fluid have gotten into the vacuum system and ruined the diaphram? Could I have arranged washers or other components incorrectly that might have contributed the problem? I was unable to locate brake fluid rated hose and used fuel hose. Is there an adjustment for the clutch? The gears grind when shifting if I am not real slow and careful. Previous owner had the clutch replaced a few thousand miles before I bought the car.

willing to bet that brake fluid casued your grief
You gotta realize that vacuum pumps suck, literally, if there was any brake fluid in there, it most likely got sucked into the vacuum pump.
Now I would think that Mercedes would engineer the vacuum pump so that brake fluid wouldn't hurt it, so I may be way off base here. Do you have instructions for rebuilding the vacuum pump? |
