Bad ALDA

How would you know if your ALDA is bad? Should it hold vacuum?

yep. I had a bad one recently, you could blow into the line and feel it leaking down.

put vacume on an ALDA and you ruin it.....they should NEVER see vacume...only pressure.

I know I have a bad ALDA. I put 10psi pressure into the line and it will leak down to 2psi and hold there in 3-5 seconds.

I've got one now I'm trying to troubleshoot. A friend's 1983 300SD with 214K. This car is a gem. It runs pretty good at speed, but man oh man watch out pulling out into traffic, it can't get out of its own way quick enough. A good 2 seconds before the boost gauge needle even moves off zero.

Started with the usual stuff. Installed a boost gauge, gets 10psi full load, before and after the overboost valve. removed the banjo bolt at the intake and line, massive amounts of crud in it. cleaned them out, reassembled and drove again, still 10 psi. hmm.

I ran out of time today but for tomorrow I had some more ideas to try. ALDA is still unmolested, I'll have to do something about that. The linkage seems a little stiff and I have yet to check if its hitting the full stops. The car also has some vacuum issues, it hits every gear hard, although the engine shuts off just fine. maybe just needs the modulator adjusted.

It just seems odd to me that the car drags its ass off the line, yet gets slightly more boost than my 300CD.

It would appear that the seals are leaking a bit more than desired, however, this does not mean the ALDA won't do a fine job for you. The manifold has, effectively, unlimited air, so a small leak at the ALDA seals won't affect it at all.

The only issue is whether the 4 mm Tecalan line can flow enough air to maintain boost pressure in the ALDA. If yours leaks down in five seconds, I'd be fairly confident that the Tecalan lines are up to the task.

You can confirm all of this theory as follows:

Get a boost gauge. Connect it via a T into the ALDA line. Drive the vehicle and observe the boost at the ALDA. If it is making an adequate level of boost (10-12 psi), then you don't need to worry about it.

My SD is making about 9 psi due to the wastegate adjustment. I'll fix it once the head gasket is complete.

Well, here's a follow up on that SD from yesterday.

I took all the linkages off and greased them, as well as lubed anything else that moved. That metal on metal squeak is gone and the pedal moves much easier. I cut off the cover on the alda adjustment and backed the screw out two full turns.

The car is a rocket now Only a little poof of smoke on take off

FYI........10psi is about average for what the wastegate is adjusted from the factory for so anyone who reads this doesn't think they have a problem.
