Whats inside a W123 300D automatic trasnmission?

I got mine out and I am curious. This afternoon, I started to get curious and i wanted to open it up. Why dont they ever give out information on this in Mercedes manuals?

They try to eliminate from common knowledge information to protect their advanced technology. That technology is many little elves running on small treadmills manufactured in the black forest region usually in the transmission case on 123 models. Actually they have a suplementary manual for transmissions much like the supplementary one for climate control. Five separate manuals for this model I believe and some additional supplements like repairing electrical problems I think.

I think with the cost of overhaul it would be more proper to call those Black Forest entities TROLLS....

Go to your local transmission parts house and buy an ATSG manual. Someone posted here that the manual wasn't very good for these transmissions but it is probably good enough to make you change your mind about cracking the transmission open.

A buddy of mine who rebuilt transmissions for many years never said a good word about a MB transmission.

If you have seen wet multi-plate clutches like in a motorcycle, the insides of an automatic wouldn't look too strange to you. Planetary gears and clutches applied with hydraulics, that is about it.

Exactly There's just expensive white light in there that streams out if you open it, its best to let a white light-able person mess with it.

Its just not Mercedes Manuals-all of 'em. I bought a Haynes Manual recently for my VW-TDI and was looking for the Specs page that listed the wattge/volts for replacement Bulbs--NO wrere in that Big manual is it even listed-same for the Extensive Owner's manual that comes with the Car. When asked about it, my Indy mechanic said "When you need to replace stuff like that, go to a shop" Right, and pay someone a labor rate of $70-$100 per hour to change a turn signal bulb. This is the idea in the VW manual-even says exactly that. Give me a break!

Yup, it's for a 722 variant.

ATSG books are FULL of info. I have them for GM: 4L60E, 4L80E. Ford AOD, E4OD/4R100, among others.
