What is the ALDA and what does it do?

I am chasing vacuum leaks, and I found a broken hose that, after doing some research here I discovered is part of the ALDA. The hose goes from a metal piece on the dirver's side firewall to metal cylinder on the passenger's side of the motor. My question is what is the ALDA and what exactly does it do. I know it made a HUGE difference in the get up and go in my car. I can actually merge at a reasonable speed now.

Thanks for the help to the new guy
Andrew
