Question 240d sleeves

So is it possible for me to tap or press out my diesel cylinder sleeves myself or must a shop do it? Rebuilding my CLEAN ebay bought 79 240d with a tired engine. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.
Jay

I don't know what kind of tools you have.... but I suggest you find a copy of the 616 engine manual so that you don't mess up anything along the way...
There are lots of things which a person familiar with American or Japanese engines will find strange... the manual has the warnings.. while the info on this forum may allow you to do all the job I know that lots of the warnings are missing...
The manual shows a homemade tool for use in pulling them out... but the real problem comes after you have put the new ones in and you need to grind the top to a very close tolerance... but you can only determine that with it in the block...
Do a search here for ' skinnerbox' and check out the online engine manual there... it is for the turbo but the sleeve situation applies to you.

Have you adjusted the valves yet?

Just trying to think of anything simpler than an engine rebuild that might cause "tired engine" symptoms.

I just assumed you were already committed to rebuilding it...
If you have any doubt , or want to postpone it , then 'Diesel Purge' and setting the start of fuel delivery by the 'drip method' should be added to the valve settings. While you are ' there' at the 'valve setting' check for 'chain elongation'. All these processes are well described in our archives, using the words I have put 'and' around.....
Since you did not start with many horses in the first place... getting back 5 or 10 can really be felt when driving around.
