Subject: rack damper pin not found, help.. From: whunter

Help Phil.
I tried to look up the rack damper pin for 1985 300SD.
What is the part number, and is it on FastLane?
I have tried to find this part for several other MB, with no results on
FastLane.

Hey,
As long as were discussing the rack dampner pin I have a question.
I thought I read in a post somewhere that there is an upgrade bolt. Is this true or am I just imagining things?

The new bolt is gold colored, the old one is sliver. The change was done years ago and you only get the updated version when you order it.

Ok so I'm not imagining things. whewww...

So what is the benefit of having the new one as compared to the original?

Danny

It's not worn. :D

From what I have read, the older bolt becomes worn and causes the fuel control rack, inside the IP, to not dampen correctly.

If worn sufficiently, the result is feeling like you are in a butter churn at idle. (If you are not familiar with butter churns, think washing machine. ;) )

Mine idles quite nicely with 237K on the clock. I saw an '85 SD with half the miles last year that the engine was rocking back and forth at idle. Is that what you're talking about SD Blue?

Mine rocks a bit when it gets really hot however is this worth the 50 bucks? Just seems kinda steep for the little rod with a spring/point on the end.

Exactly, If you take a jar of fresh whole milk, and rock it back and forth, it won't be long before the butterfat clumps together.

That is the symptom, however, it would be a good idea to try an adjustment first. To adjust it, loosen the locknut and screw it in till you feel it just contact the rack. Then tighten the locknut. If you screw it in too far, it may become hard to start.

However, if you still have the symptoms, it may need replacement. After a while, the shake will get bad enough you will replace the damper bolt. (I guess that is why they charge so much for it.)

you can test the stiffness of the spring, press the tip of the damper bolt against a hard surface. When the spring gets weak the damper bolt loses the proper "push" against the rack.
At least 2 other factors may be involved with a loping idle; a tired engine shock can aggravate this condition and the condition (balance) of the injectors affect the tendency for the engine to lope.

I wonder if the bolt is the same as the idle adjustment bolt, meaning if you can swap between the two. The idle adjustment bolt is also spring loaded.

Sorry I forgot to mention that someone has already adjusted mine in all the way already. I even have the light surguing of idle speed at idle when hot on occasion.

I always thought that this damper bolt was the same item as the idle adjust bolt - anyone got any pictures showing where the damper bolt is in relation to the idle bolt?

Idle adjust bolt is a hex with a slot located on IP near head, lock nut on bottom, loosen, turn hex with flat screw driver. RD bolt is located on rear of IP, just in front of oil filter housing. 14mm lock bolt closest to IP, 12mm adjusting bolt. I did this with engine at operating temp while idling. Back out 12mm till smooth idle, tighten 14mm. I love stubby gearwrenches!
