Belt Tensioner!!!!

My belt tensioner has come unbolted from the engine and is pushing into my water pump pulley!!! The tensioner seems pretty trashed and I need a new one. I just hope there is no damage to the water pump. The fan clutch wires are completely broken off from the clutch connector. I undid the tensioner as though to take the belt off and the tension is still on the belt. But this is because it's pushing into the water pump pulley. I am afraid I am going to have to cut the belt off to the tensioner off. help

Look for another idler pulley to take off. I'm not familiar with your car, but my 103 engine has two idlers. Also, the alternator **may** be an adjustment.

Remember, if you cut the belt to get it off, you get to start from scratch putting the new one on. BTDT.

Best of luck,

On the 602 engines...

I don't know about the 601's, but the 602 engine in my 190D 2.5 has a small "pocket" in the tensioner bracket that accepts a round rod (a long 3/8" drive socket extension works great). Put a rod in that "pocket", and use the rod as leverage to move the idler pulley, thus giving the slack that you needto remove the belt without cutting.

Well I fixed it the next morning. I ended up cutting the belt off. The belt was trashed anyway, it's a 6 rib belt that now has 5 ribs. Turns out all I had to do was tighten the tensioner back down with a 12mm allen and install a new belt. I used roughly a 4 ft long breaker bar to torque down the tensioner bolt just to be sure it won't come loose until it is intended to be. Tensioner is pretty chewed up looking but I think it will work for now. I have pics.
