O.K., first winter with a diesel here in NJ and I have a few questions. Thanks in advance for any answers.
1. When do I need to install anti-gel, temperature-wise, and are there any good brands or is generic O.K.?
2. I am currently using Amsoil 15W40 full synthetic. Am I correct in thinking that this is a proper weight oil for NJ winters where 10-15 degrees F nights are common?

Lastly, is changing the thermostat in an '85 300D as easy as it looks? I am getting tired of cool drives, and the cardboard in the grill is not cutting it.

Thanks, and I pray you all have a Merry Christmas, and grand holiday season, and the best New Year of your lives.

If I were you, I'd run Mobil 1 10W-30 in the winter and Mobil 1 15W-50 in the summer (all synthetic of course).

15W40 is fine for temperatures down to about 0 degrees F.

According to my owners manual from some years ago, diesel gels at 8 degrees Fahrenheit. Any anti gel additive will be adequate if you follow the directions.

Merry Christmas,

PS DSinger, your 124 looks great!

AMZOIL

It's good for a lot lower than zero due to its designed-in stability. And, it will maintain its ability to lubricate far above your temp need in summer too.

Zachv, I had commuted to "Jersey" for almost 20 years and I have never had any jelling problems with the fuel they sell in Jersey( mostly Hess diesel bought in Phillipsburg). The only times that I added antijel is when we get a long cold snap,10degrees or less. Good luck, Jay

I've used only Redline diesel conditioner for the past 15 years in my 85TDT and it runs great even in NE winters. Redline is hard to find but I've always liked the results.
