strange noise from my instrament panel

I was driving to work today in my 74 240D and a strange humm or buzz came from my instrament panel. It got louder the faster I went and stoped completly when I stopped. I thought it could be the tachometer trying to rotate, but thats been broken for since I got her. What could it be?

Speedo cable is dying.....or the speedometer itself.

w140 same noise.

I got the exact noise as described in the first post.

1992 400SE, no speedo cable, all electrical.

Everything on the cluster works, could it be the life of the Tachometer or Speedometer comming to a close?

Thanks.

Even if you speedo it electric there it probably something spinning to rotate the needle and the odometer gears, assuming its not digital, I would guess there is a gear slipping somewhere in the cluster.

Its definetly the tachometer. Even in Neutral if you rev the engine, the noise increases as the RPM's increase.

Will take apart and see whats there.

Anyone experience this? What to look for?

Thanks.
