A lot of people here bad mouth the S350 and I realize that there were some bad ones. Some say thay pushed the motor a little too far in design. But I am closing in on 300,000 miles and the only thing I have done to the engine is a head gasket because it was leaking a little water out the back left corner (I also had a valve job since I had it off), turbo rebuilt, and injection pump resealed. The output of the engine is 148 hp, which isn't pushing it too much in my opinion. The '98 E-Class Diesel is a 3.0 Liter and outputs about 175 hp. I don't baby the engine and it uses a quart of oil every 1500 miles. The 140's are complicated cars with lots of electricals. Stuff does wear out. I have found that when something breaks, you just fix it then and there. (Window regulators come to mind). In summary the S350 is the best car I have ever owned. Long term the cheapest to operate also. Where else can you find a 5000 lb car that gets over 25 mpg, 0-60 in 11 seconds, top speed around 120 mph and rides and handles so well?

Boost pressure. Why would one have a led gauge showing voltage in the center of the pod?

- I get nervous every time I hit the triple digit marker(nearly everyday of the week). I usually back off to 85 as soon as I get there. The road moves too fast at those speeds to watch all angles. I usually wait for some speed demon to open up the road. Then I follow his lead. Happens VERY often around here, and especially on I95 southbound north of Boston.

I think that speed variance between mileage reading is pretty negligable. I mean, there are many different parameters that can cause that kind of reduction. From environmental, to external mechanicals, to internal mechanicals.

That said, why are you going through 1500 miles per quart? Where is it going?

I don't really know. Has been using a little oil for a while now. When the turbo seals went out and I had the turbo rebuilt, I thought that would help but it didn't. When I replaced the head gasket and had the head reworked (valve guides, seals, etc) that helped some for a while. Engine has good compression. Does have some blowby, but not abnormal for the mileage. Even new it would use 1 qt. every 3000 miles. I guess I am just used to it now. I use Mobil Delvac synthetic and have decided that when it goes to 1 qt. every 1000 miles I will change to dino oil and run the engine on out with that.
