Strange nothing aftermarket has turned up to really help milage to some extent. Primary engine design may be the limiting factor though. edit:coldwar have noticed on my older pre tdi diesel volkswagons that they gain signifigant milage on a really hot day when on a long trip. Has happened too many times to be circumstance. Perhaps it is the same with the mercedes diesels but have never really taken notice yet. The hotter air is less dense of course but seems to aid combustion to some extent when really warm out. Thinking 85+.

Hi Barry- yeah- I had an '89 Golf NA Diesel 5 speed that got 50+ MPG in the summer- the hotter the better. When I first got the 300D I was "silly" enough to think it would give me around 40
Was a little disappointed when I could barely squeeze 30, but then I got to thinking- Benz's engine displacement is nearly double that of VW, the 300D is almost double the weight of a Golf, and also about as aerodynamic as a brick ****-house. Not to mention automatic tranny with no overdrive vs- the Golf's manual 5 speed OD. Then it only stands to reason that there is no comparison- the Benz should get half the MPG of the VW if it weighs twice as much, right?
BTW- I'm still meaning to give you a call sometime soon.
